Design your own bed linen: Different options presented

Single-color standard bedding was a thing of the past, today individual and creative duvet covers are in demand. Luckily, there are two ways to make your own bedding yourself. Find out how to do it in today's guide!

Customize your own bed linen: These are what you have

In principle, there are two different options if you want to design your own bed linen yourself. On the one hand, you can upload one or more of your own photos to a photo service that offers photo gifts, such as photo bedding, and create the bed linen you want online. You can also design the matching photo cushion with your own photo for such services. On the other hand, it is possible to color the sheets with suitable textile dye. The coloring of bed linen is particularly useful if you already have a bed linen that you optically no longer like and you wish to spruce up the duvet covers a little.

Option 1: Make photo bedding online

This option, To make bedding individually, is certainly the most comfortable. All you have to do is select a nice photo, upload it to a suitable provider, and if necessary make a few more adjustments before submitting your order. Then, wait until your new bedding is delivered to your home.

Things to consider when ordering photo bedding

If you want to make your own photo bedding online, there are a few things to keep in mind should. The decisive factor is above all the material from which the duvet covers are made. Not only should it feel cuddly and soft, it should also be breathable so you do not over-sweat at night.

Always check that the quality of your photo is good enough to be printed on large sheets. Many vendors have integrated a quality check into the product designer for this.

Before ordering, you should also check which printing method is used to print the photo on the covers and cushions. For example, there are modern methods such as thermal sublimation printing. The photo is literally evaporated into the textiles, so that it is no longer noticeable. For other older printing methods, the photo is only printed externally. This has two major drawbacks: frequent washing makes the colors fade faster, and the bedding printed in this way feels rigid and cold on the body.

Option 2: Redecorate old bed linen

You are looking for an inexpensive option to make your own bed linen and you do not want to buy new bed linen, but rather spice up an older specimen? In this case, you can make your duvet covers with textile color individually and creatively.

Redecorate bed linen: you should pay attention to

For dyeing, all fabrics are made of natural materials. These include linen, viscose and cotton. But mixed fibers, which have been made of at least 60 percent natural materials, can also be treated with textile dye.

Unfortunately, bed linen, which are mainly made of synthetic fibers, can not be dyed afresh. This applies, for example, to polyester or microfibre bed linen.

It is also important that the bed linen is at least 40 degrees washable. In addition, it is only possible to dye light bed linen darker. The reverse is not working, so no dark yellow sheets can turn yellow. All buttons and zippers do not take on the color. Patterns usually remain visible unless you choose a very dark color.

You Need These Materials

To re-color your bedding, you'll need some materials.

  • Old bedding that needs to be dyed
  • Suitable textile dye
  • A color fixing agent
  • Detergent

Before you buy the textile dye, weigh your laundry. Then you know immediately how much color you need. Basically, the heavier the bed linen, the more color you need. You can also color the laundry with less color, but the result will be less intense.

Bedding Coloring Guide

Once you've gotten all the materials you need to color the bedding, you're ready to go , Read the pack of textile dye so you know how much dye you need for your bedding. Then prepare the laundry.

Dyeing works best when the bedding is slightly damp. You can therefore use freshly laundered laundry or lightly moisten the duvet covers.

Now place the dye fixer on the laundry and run a gentle wash program. After about five minutes have passed, place the textile dye in the compartment for the detergent. Rinse with about one liter of water. Once the wash program has ended, the laundry must be washed again. Also use detergent for this run. This will help to prevent the bedding from rubbing off later. Then you can dry the sheets on a leash or in a dryer

Designing Great Patterns

Do you find monochrome bedding too boring? Then you color great patterns. In particular, the batik look is in demand again and works quite simply. You only need to tie, bind and fold the duvet covers before dyeing. When you release the ribbons after dyeing, you will see great patterns that visually spice up any boring duvet cover. Great accents you can then still set with ruffles and borders. Alternatively, it is possible to color white duvet covers only in places. To do this, mix the textile dye in a bucket and dip the duvet cover only partially into the paint. It creates a great, flowing color gradient.

Advantages and disadvantages of coloring old bed linen

The advantage of this variant of the self-designed bed linen is that you do not have to buy new bed linen. Instead, you can use a copy that you did not like visually any more. Coloring is therefore cheaper than the online design of photo bedding. In addition, working with the textile dye gives most people much pleasure, because they can let their creativity run wild. The only drawback: if you repaint already used bed linen, the result is not a gift. For this, you would have to buy new, simple duvet covers and then dye them in.

Basically, there are two different ways to make your own bed linen. You can either have your sheets printed with an own photo service at an online photo service, or you can use your old bedding to repaint them with textile paint. Both variants have their own advantages and disadvantages.
