Affordable and Eco-Friendly Renovate

When renovating your own four walls is imminent set the course for the living climate of the next years. This happens almost unnoticed. With each material, which is processed during the renovation in the rooms, the height of the future load of the indoor air decides.

When walking through the hardware store or through a specialist shop of the interior design, one might think that the selection of suitable paintings, wallpapers and other things is almost inexhaustible. The same applies to floor coverings and furniture. However, in these stores, and especially in the paint departments, a scent cocktail hangs between the rows of shelves to alert the consumer. Should this cocktail really fog the dining table in the future or lead to allergies in the nursery?

Low emission and low-emission products for renovation

The look at one of these paint cans provides the answer. All manufacturers of these products are required to mark their articles as to whether they are suitable for indoor use. This label states that they are either completely free of pollutants or contain only extremely low concentrations. A first indication of this low pollution are all paints and other paints that are water-soluble. For items that are not dilutable, this note is missing. Here it is sufficient to know if the tools can be cleaned with water after work. All paints that require thinners or brush cleaners during processing or cleaning are contaminated with pollutants. Their use in interior renovation should therefore be avoided. They are subject to harmful exhalations that affect the indoor climate for a long time after the renovation. They cause irritation to the respiratory system and the eyes and damage the autonomic nervous system. Constant fatigue is, among other things, a sign of contaminated indoor air.

The same problem exists in the area of wallpapers and floor coverings. All wallpapers that contain the abbreviation CV, VC or vinyl in their material composition are contaminated with a plasticizer. Wallpaper without plasticizer and polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) are free of these pollutants. The same designations are used on floor coverings, cork, laminate and parquet. In the case of parquet, the choice of a water-soluble, low-emission varnish is also crucial to the quality.

Those who want to be sure that they use environmentally and health-friendly materials for their renovation pay attention to the "Blue Angel" seal of approval. It is only one of several possible markings, but at least the most common. These products are not only low in emissions and low in pollutants. They are also produced in an environmentally friendly way.

Sustainability in material selection is also possible during renovation

Environmental and health-conscious thinking in renovation also continues with the use of sustainably produced materials. For example, wallpaper made of recycled paper is a sign of sustainability because it does not waste any valuable raw materials such as vinyl wallpaper . They are preferably used for woodchip wallpaper, which are also much more breathable due to their material structure. They not only do without pollutants and chemicals during production, but also improve the air exchange in the room.

Sustainability , however, also means using the existing one as much as possible. This is not to say that the worn floor covering should be preserved. However, many things can be processed cost-effectively. For example, a wall covered by multiple layers of paint should be restored to its original state. The amount of work initially seems to be high, with these layers must be removed. The temptation to dress up the wall is great. However, if one puts the cost of material procurement in relation to it, the preparation of the wall is much cheaper. But it also contributes to sustainability, because it saves the installation of new materials.

An area of eco-conscious renovation that has been rather neglected so far is the use of natural materials. Certainly a clay plaster can not be applied in every room. In the party cellar, for example, it radiates a characteristic room climate. Any renovation can be a cost-effective way to improve the environment and improve your health.
