Light conditions in the workplace - basics and tips
The inner and outer environment of the workplace is authoritatively responsible for its effectiveness . For example, researchers from the USA have been able to establish a direct relationship between the intensity of light irradiation and the results of work delivered, in particular the temporal component was characterized by sometimes massive differences. In science, therefore, light also has a psychological effect, which can be positively guided by its own organization.
In this article, we will focus on the principles and then give you important clues that you can observe when setting up a new facility.
Visual perception is changing
Do you know the feeling that you feel exhausted and unfocused after reading magazines and other printed materials in the dark or in low light? The eye is subjected to increased stress in several points, the reflection is reduced to a minimum, so that recorded information in the brain can be processed only with delay . First of all, it must be ensured that every workstation is basically illuminated. As a rule, these are the tasks of state-of-the-art grid-type recessed luminaires, which are effectively and cost-effectively available.
Such designs are generally standardized according to DIN EN 12464-1 and equipped with a parabolic louvre grid that uses efficient T5 fluorescent lamps. As a result, the light color is uniformly implemented and achieved a huge effect in saving energy. These modular models can be used in any room with a system ceiling, whereby visible as well as invisible mounting rails can be selected. The built-in cross blades distribute the light evenly. This type of lighting in different types of space can also be equipped with changing bulbs and thus has room in waiting rooms, lounges and offices of all kinds.
The general structure of workplaces
The next step is to find out what is available in the room and illuminance emanating from external and internal elements to be ideally distributed by means of a new spatial structure. It is clear that daylight for a natural environment is the benchmark in the light conditions. Experts have found in a broad field trial that subjects perceive the perceived intensity of artificial lighting changed by daylight, mostly as negative. Therefore, it must be ensured that the light color of the illumination also corresponds approximately to the light color of the natural daylight . Very interesting are table lamps with dimmers, which ensure a gentle, advantageous lighting, especially in the early morning hours of winter.
Also, make sure that not every light source in the workplace is the same as , ie every situation has the same perception. Variation gives the room a more personal touch, in particular, it prevents regular stressful situations due to lack of variety, since every work activity has the same psychological effect. Recently, modern concepts of state-of-the-art LED technology are convincing, since these lamps can be implemented in almost any form due to the lack of heat or only low heat generation. In addition, it is highly advisable to position the work surface near a window, as the external influences improve the natural bio-rhythm and thus prevent tiredness.
This is important
Of importance when choosing new lamps is that you know the needs of the room and can decide afterwards.
- Adjustable lamps, for example with different colors or the possibility of dimming, are suitable as desk lighting.
- Wall lighting is used primarily as a design element and is therefore usually selected only on the basis of this factor. From a psychological point of view, that's true too, at least when the workplace environment is far from it. But watch out for flicker-free and glare-free lamps.
- Bright light colors such as neutral white or warm white are suitable for enhancing the cozy character of the room. Do not wait too long to replace old or even faulty lights.
- Lounges should completely forego direct, precise lighting. This is important only in the immediate vicinity of the work surface. In order to avoid glare or reflections, it may be useful to use room dividers or to improve the natural effect of light in other ways.
