Ergonomic design of the workplace - desk as a central element

Working in the office According to recent studies in the field of occupational safety and occupational medicine, to a great extent be responsible for wear in muscles and joints. The reason for this is according to broad opinion in the wrong seating positions, which can be felt in the form of back pain, shoulder tension and the like. In addition, the effects on the eyes are not fully investigated by permanent screen light, but they can be significantly reduced by ergonomic working.

In this paper, we focus on ergonomics, in other words the user-friendliness of workplaces A section will focus on the features and joins of the desk.

Efficient and error-free work

It's easy to see that ergonomic workplace design has a high relevance to how effectively you end up doing your job can. Too low desks strain the back and cause tension, while fixed seats restrict freedom of movement and promote increased wear on muscles and joints. The statistics of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAUA) are not astonishing, according to which 46 percent of all office workers complain of back pain. The BAUA is the central body for standardization in this area, it offers ways to prevent it and thus acts as a point of contact for all operational concerns in the area of occupational safety.

The desk plays a very central role in defining size and shape desk chairs, screen tilt and other elements in the office furniture. The first thing to do is to aim at the height of the desk chair and your own height in order to optimally design the three zones of work intensity. According to the recommendations of the BAUA, a desk should therefore be adjustable in height in the range between 68 and 118 centimeters, which offers the optimum height for standing and sitting work. That already back and joints.

The height adjustment is due to the awkward but only an important feature, much more in the range of 68 to 82 inches has a meaning. If a height adjustment by means of a grid hole in the base frame is possible here, then the ideal height for sitting work can be set and also unevenness of the floor can be compensated by separate screws. According to Jörg Feldmann, spokesman for BAUA, the average of 72 centimeters applies to about 95 percent of the population.

Further important characteristics

  • So that the three zones of the desk, for frequent, short-term and rare works to a corresponding extent can be introduced, minimum dimensions for the size of the desk top must be observed. Here we recommend a minimum width of 160 centimeters and a minimum depth of 80 centimeters. If you still use a tube screen or other accessories, you should recommend at least 100 centimeters here. This provides open space for arms above and legs below the desk top.
  • Classic controls, such as a keyboard, mouse or phone, should be placed in a direct handle position at a distance of about 40 centimeters from the edge of the desk. Irregularly used elements, such as punches or other office utensils, can be positioned in the range of 60 to 90 centimeters. This creates free space for flexible working with documents, it also expands the typical movement sequences and makes them flexible.
  • Comprehensive cable management is required in order to be able to execute several work steps in parallel. For this reason, classic rectangular-shaped desks should be equipped with a horizontally integrated cable tray under the table top, which has a vertical base in the table base.
  • Melamine-coated desk tops in white or other wood colors have the advantage of being extremely robust in everyday life scratch resistant. This is a formaldehyde-containing coating, which also offers design options in terms of aesthetics.
