Painting clinker: This is how the façade becomes beautiful again with paint

They are expensive but beautiful. Clinker facades can be found in the north of Germany outside the house. But many owners have now enough of the timeless color and would like to change the facade of the house. Remove? Better not. Brushing is the cost-effective alternative to getting clinker and still shine in new splendor.

What are clinker facades?

Clinkers are bricks. However, they differ mainly by one: The burning of these stones takes place under such high temperatures that close the pores - sintered stones are also called ajar to this sintering process. Because this makes it possible for the clinker brick to allow moisture to escape from the inside to the outside. In return, the moisture does not penetrate from the outside to the inside. Clinker façades optimally regulate the humidity.

Many a homeowner has opted for this costly purchase. Building with clinker was particularly popular in the 70s. Because clinker bricks are also particularly durable, offer excellent heat and sound insulation properties and have a low need for care. The bricks defy wind and weather, they withstand heat and cold easily.

But only this reddish brown - that makes so many eyes tired. If homeowners are tired of their clinker façade, they should not think about a distance. Brushing the clinker is an alternative: the advantages of bricks remain, but a new look will follow!

Not every clinker brick facade can be painted. Color works best on dull and rough clinker. Adhesion problems can occur with glazed stones. Absorbency can be tested with a drop of water - if it drips off, the stone is not absorbent and will not support the primer and paint.

Materials: Which color is the right choice?

Clinkers have special properties. This should not be destroyed by careless stroking with any color. Therefore, it is advisable to inquire in the retailer exactly what color is suitable for the clinker facade. Not all façade colors are suitable.

If the clinker façade is to get a new coat of paint, the paint must be able to let in moisture - to allow regulation from the inside to the outside. In many cases, pure silicate paint or dispersion silicate paint is used. The former offers excellent durability, ecological compatibility and water vapor diffusion on a mineral basis. However, it is usually the expensive option. Dispersion silicate paint is a covering color with properties of mineral colors and synthetic resin paints. Also, it offers a high water permeability and is usually the cheaper alternative.

But the color is not all that the homeowner needs to paint a clinker facade. If the substrate is particularly absorbent, it also needs a primer. In addition, careful cleaning work in advance is necessary. Therefore, the material and tool lists are as follows:

  • Primer
  • Paint
  • Grout (in case of damage)

  • Steam cleaner
  • Paint roller
  • Quast
  • Flat brush
  • Paint sprayer (for large areas)
  • Joint scraper (if damaged)
  • Scaffolding / Ladder

It is often the case here: those who buy cheap, strike twice. Especially with a high-quality facade with clinker, only high-quality products should be used. The specialist trade offers here often better quality, but also more expensive colors than the hardware store.

The preparation and painting of the outer facade

If the clinker facade get a new coat of paint, the handyman can not start immediately with the color. Because the new look looks good and lasts a long time, the façade has to be specially prepared and cleaned beforehand.

The first step is the inspection. Are all clinker joints still intact or does it crumble here and there? In the appropriate places, the broken mortar should be removed with the joint scraper and replaced with new ones.

In the second step, the clinker façade is thoroughly cleaned. Here the external facade of the high-pressure steam jet is used. The clinker must be completely removed from the dirt - a thorough work is essential here. For in places where dirt and co remain hanging, the paint can peel off later.

In the third step, the primer with the puff is applied. Here the do-it-yourselfer should pay attention to the manufacturer's information. The primer must not be completely dry before painting. Because then it no longer connects with the color: the times on the product package give orientation.

The final step is the actual painting with the paint. For smaller areas, a scooter is sufficient, but a paint sprayer can make work easier on large surfaces. But as with all wall coatings should first be painted with a flat brush corners and angles in which the paint roller does not go. A telescopic pole also allows painting the wall at further distances. In some cases, scaffolding and / or ladder are therefore superfluous.

Clinker inside: color helps here too

But it is not just the outer wall that is made of clinker: it is not uncommon for them to be found indoors as well. Living with clinker in the house has its own charm.

Anyone who wants to paint the bricks here, however, has less effort than on the outside facade. When cleaning only the brush is used because the stones were not exposed to the weather conditions. A high-pressure cleaner is neither necessary nor useful here. If necessary, the vacuum cleaner can help to clear away dust.

Priming and painting are done indoors as well as on the outside facade. Again, the transitions to the ceiling and other walls should first be painted with a paintbrush before the paint roller is used.

Refinement with a difference: an alternative to painting

But it is not just color that promises a change in the clinker facade. Especially on the house walls, which are not absorbent, alternatives can help to upgrade the house optics. The brush does not always have to be applied.

A clinker facade can also appear in a new look by attaching a garland of foliage to it. Many a homeowner uses grapevines here, as they offer a nice coloration, especially in autumn. In the winter, however, only dark branches are visible and the facade looks anything but beautiful. If you want to beautify your brick wall with plants, you should therefore resort to evergreen vine plants. Ivy is a wonderful way to do that.

A clinker facade is of high quality, optimally regulates the moisture in the house and was rarely cheap to buy. Therefore, the removal of the clinker is always the last option - the painting of the wall also gives the facades a new look. It all depends on the right colors. Thorough cleaning before painting is also essential.
