Purchasing advice: Robust electric tools for DIY

What would a home improvement do without its power tools? One thing is certain, he would do his job more slowly and less precisely. Numerous manufacturers from all over the world produce high-quality power tools that help DIY enthusiasts to set up small and large projects. Which of these tools are of high quality and how do home improvement people recognize them? These questions are answered in this article.

Repairs to the house, the construction of a playground for the offspring, the installation of plasterboard - these and many more tasks have a prerequisite: suitable power tool. We have already reported on the most important power tools for home improvement. However, this article is about the purchase of equipment and what features to look for.

Branded Products or Discount Store Tools

There are people who buy branded products only. Others are convinced that the brand plays a less important role. This may be true for clothing, but for tools it looks a little different.

Many do-it-yourselfers underestimate the importance of a power tool. A high-quality device makes it easier for him (effort) and reduces the working time. An investment that is more than worthwhile over the years.

Whoever buys cheap buys twice.

We can divide the power tool into three groups:

  • Products from the discount store
  • Products of the DIY store
  • Brand tool

There's a subtle, but crucial difference to the make tool: there are home improvement and handyman products. The latter usually have greater demands on the tool, since they ultimately earn their money with this activity.

Nobody wants to deny that there are any products among the discounter tools that last ten years or more. What happens if it breaks after a few years? The warranty has expired, the home improvement is looking for spare parts in vain. The only solution is the new purchase.

The products in the hardware store are similar to the tool from the discount store. The difference: There are many years warranty - and at similar product prices. In terms of quality, these items are sometimes good but not comparable to branded products.

The home improvement brand tool is manufactured by well-known companies. The quality differences to the previous two categories have their price. These costs mean more comfort and shorter working hours.

Which brand is recommended?

There is no blanket response to this question. As the Contorion brand ranking for power tools demonstrates, there are several winners in different product categories.

There are home improvement enthusiasts who remain loyal to a brand. This situation is similar to the people who buy clothes from a manufacturer. While one can argue about taste, tooling looks different: it's not personal taste that determines who delivers the better product. Do-it-yourselfers who always want to have the best tools should not be loyal to any brand.

The above study tested 27 brands in nine different categories. The winners of the categories drills, jigsaws and angle grinders come from different manufacturers. It becomes clear that certain brands deliver better products in some categories than in others. Of course, the major manufacturers offer products for almost every category. But that does not mean that they are all the best tools in the industry.

When a brand tool pays off

The scope of DIY is different from person to person. Some use the drill every day, others mostly the circular saw. Basically, it is worthwhile to buy branded tools, if you often use this utensil. For tools that are used less frequently, home improvement can calmly resort to cheaper variants.

If the budget of the home improvement is large, the purchase of brand tool is worthwhile in any case. It lasts longer and will faithfully serve it for many years.

Electric Power Tool or Battery

The make of the tool is not the only purchase criterion that causes discussion. Old-fashioned do-it-yourselfers are convinced that a power tool needs to be powered by power cables.

Battery tools have been available for quite some time, giving DIY enthusiasts more room to work. In certain situations, a battery increases safety while working. The only downside is the lack of performance.

Of course, every device powered by a battery has performance limitations. Manufacturers have to make a compromise between performance and runtime. The good news: Do-it-yourselfers can buy multiple rechargeable batteries and replace them if necessary.

Do-it-yourselfers should pay attention to a purchase criterion when purchasing rechargeable tools: That the power tools all use the same rechargeable battery. The advantage: the batteries can be exchanged with each other.

Before purchasing a cordless tool, we recommend DIYers to read the German Federal Environmental Agency's Guide Batteries and Accumulators (PDF).

Ergonomics: An Underrated Purchasing Criterion

Many do-it-yourselfers only pay attention to the brand or the price when buying. They underestimate an important purchase criterion: the handling of the tool. Remember, the power tool will give you hours and hours of work - sometimes in awkward positions.

The ergonomic features of the tool should be:

  • Lightweight and compact : the lighter and more compact the device, the better Handymakers can hold the tool in their hands longer.
  • Good Handling : Drilling and other activities require a lot of power. Good handling makes this task easier.
  • Perfect Power Transmission : The stop position is important to many tools as it aids power transmission.

Home improvement should also be easy to use in terms of ergonomics. Each item must be easily accessible.

Summary

Do-it-yourselfers must consider many criteria when choosing their power tool. Brands bring them benefits such as higher quality resulting in shorter working hours. Power tools are wired and available with batteries. The latter increase flexibility and reduce the risk of accidents.
