Causes Broken Tiles

They are as diverse as the patterns on the smooth boards - the reasons why a tile can break. Not infrequently, they are currently being drilled on the bathroom or kitchen wall to secure shelf. Slipped with the hairbrush? The heavy glass bottle dropped onto the tile floor? Whenever weight is applied to the tile that was not planned, it can crack or flake off. Also mistakes when laying leads to damage. If the wrong glue is used, it can crack quickly.

Other sources of error include incomplete glue or blistering under the ceramic plate. In this case, cavities remain under the tile, which give way under later load. Therefore, care should be taken when laying the ceramic tiles to ensure that they are not subsequently repaired.

Consequences of tile damage

Broken tiles on the wall and on the floor not only look ugly, they can do so cause further damage. Because through the cracks, flaking and unsealed holes can penetrate moisture. If this remains undetected, it can lead to significant water damage in your own home, but also at the neighbors. Mold is another episode. Therefore, broken tiles, especially in the bathroom and kitchen and on the balcony should not be taken lightly. Once the damage has been incurred, rental apartments often cause a dispute between tenant and landlord, who has to bear the costs for its removal. If the lease contains the so-called "beauty repair clause", the renter is legally obliged to remove any holes and tears.

Materials and tools

There are several ways tiles can be repaired. That depends on the type of damage. So they can be restored using tile adhesive, filler or epoxy resin. But apart from that, the list of materials looks similar in all cases.

  • Sponge or cloth
  • Tile cleaner, or
  • Alcohol
  • Painter's crepe
  • Tile paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Gloves
  • Tile adhesive, or
  • Fillers, or
  • Epoxy
  • Joint
  • Paint Pen

The tools also depend on the type of damage. The following utensils may be necessary to make the tiles look flawless again.

  • Spatula
  • Wooden plank
  • Extruding gun
  • Brush
  • Multifunctional tool
  • Hammer
  • Chisel

Tile adhesive for torn tiles

The tile adhesive has already hit the handyman when laying the ceramic or natural stone slabs. Therefore, most of them still have it in the house and he is literally offering to restore torn tiles. Some come from the tube and therefore dry quickly. This makes it particularly well suited to cracking. But before the actual repair the place must be cleaned: Fat and dust-free is a must. This should be taken alcohol. Thereafter, the tile adhesive can be applied to the crack. With a spatula of superfluous glue is stripped off. Then the glue should dry for at least twelve hours. If the crack is still visible, the action can be repeated. Finally, the tile is painted on the affected area with the appropriate color or colorless if necessary. To prevent it from spreading to other tiles, it should be masked with crepe paper.

Fillers for Drill Holes

Anyone who has to close holes when pulling out should pick up putty. This can also be used to repair larger cracks and chips. For this, the handyman needs the wooden board to touch the mass with the appropriate hardener. Also, the tile should be cleaned and cleaned. Then the mass can be pressed into the hole and superfluous easily deducted. But that will not be completely smooth. Therefore, after about 30 minutes drying time, the mass should first coarse, then sanded fine with sandpaper. If the hole is closed smoothly, paint is used. Here, too, the area should be narrowed down with painter's crepe, so that the paint does not get in the joints.

The DIY store also offers ready-to-use masses that are easier to apply. After-treatment with sandpaper is often not necessary here. But the result is not always convincing.

Epoxy resin for chipped tiles

Chipped tiles can be repaired with synthetic resin. This is also commercially available. First, it should be tested that the resin also holds on the tiles. And even with this method, it is important to completely rid the affected areas of dirt and grease. In this repair variant, the sanding paper is already used at the beginning - so the surface must be roughened. Then the resin is applied in two layers on the damaged area. In this case, the first layer after drying must be roughened again using sandpaper. If the second layer is also dried, the tile can finally be treated with lacquer.

The artificial resin contains substances that can cause damage to health. These include redness and irritation of the skin. Therefore gloves should be worn.

Repaint light damages

Do not always need to be stuffed or glued. Sometimes it is enough to simply paint over small damages. Here the trade offers matching pens. The so-called paint pens are often available in the usual tile colors: different white variants and sanitary colors. The pins fill small flakes and compact thin cracks. Again, the tile must be cleaned before the pen is used. Then the first coat can be applied with the pen. Once this has dried, the next one can follow. This should happen so often until the damage is no longer visible. At the end, the sanding is also here, so that the tile is finally smooth again.

Just make blots is not enough. Do-it-yourselfers should be careful to apply actual layers.

Replace Tiles

Sometimes, however, it's imperative that you can not repair any major damage to tiles. Then it is time to replace the tile. This requires the multifunction tool from the tool list. The grout should be removed around the tile using a milling attachment. If it is completely detached from the other tiles, it can be hammered in the middle and removed from the inside to the outside with a hammer and a chisel. The substrate must be cleaned before applying the new tile with glue. At the very end, the joints are closed again with the appropriate mass. If the DIY enthusiast does not take this measure, it is advisable to bring a professional into the house.

Numerous videos on the Internet show the way. Anyone who is unsure should find further instructions on Youtube and Co in moving images.

Damage to tiles not only looks ugly, but can also have serious consequences. Therefore, these should be eliminated promptly, which is possible in different ways: using tile adhesive, filler or resin. In all cases, the affected areas must first be thoroughly cleaned and often painted afterwards with varnish. For minor damage sometimes a paint pen is enough, big damages make the replacement of the tile necessary.
