Screed Prices - Costs and Effort for Materials and Laying

Screed is a very functional and adaptable building material. It is available in different versions with different characteristics, creating very flexible applications. The forms differ primarily by the difference from the solid and flowing form. However, there are also major differences in the basic material, which allows, for example, outdoor use or the installation of underfloor heating.

What the concrete differences are, what forms exist and how expensive the different types are, is explained in the following paragraphs .

Different basic materials

The most common form is cement screed. This consists primarily of cement, water and other binders, such as sand or gravel. In addition, superplasticizers can be added to lay the screed fluently. Cement screed is very resistant to heat, cold and moisture. However, it dries out very slowly and may later show cracks under load. Similar properties has calcium sulfate screed. The installation and also the composition are comparable. The distinction is in the load capacity, because moisture is not compatible without further sealing. For loads it does not crack or deform. Other typical forms are synthetic resin screed, magnesia screed or mastic asphalt screed.

Every screed has advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, you should always pay close attention to the later desired application.

What screed is used for

Screed is primarily used as a floor covering. This is due to the excellent properties, such as high stability and flexible installation options. In the application, it should always be used depending on the floor, as often still heat insulation and impact sound insulation should be laid to it. In principle, however, screed can be used both outdoors and indoors without problems if the right material is used. The possibilities open up the use in the private household, regardless of floor or design. In addition, screed, if properly laid, is also a good alternative for heavier loads in the commercial sector or in larger buildings. It is even possible to equip an underground garage with screed.

Differences between liquid screed and solid forms

The most common form of screed is the liquid screed. This is basically defined by its presence in liquid form and then smoothing gets its surface shape. The advantages are very versatile. A big advantage is that the floating screed compensates for unevenness on the underlying floor without any problems. The laying is not particularly difficult, but requires a certain sensitivity. This is followed in later paragraphs by a short manual. Even the mixing of the initially dry mass is possible for do-it-yourselfers and only a few aids are needed.

In addition, some flow screeds are well suited to cover underfloor heating systems, since thus a good heat transfer is given. The fixed version is used less frequently in the ground area. It is also usually mixed materials, such as gypsum fiber screed plates. These are then usually not quite as robust as the dried liquid screed. The big advantage, however, is that these materials can also be processed in other places than the floor without any problems.

Preparation of the floors with auxiliary materials

At least as important as a good laying of the screed is the preparation of the floor underlying soil. On higher floors, a footfall sound insulation should always be installed to insulate the floors below from noise. In addition, depending on the type of screed, protection against moisture is also important. This is then also to move independently of the floor, if the screed itself has problems with moisture. Especially in ground floors, with basement below, a thermal insulation may be useful. The basement can quickly tend to pull the heat from the floor above. These insulation is usually laid in the form of roll-out tracks. It is important that the webs overlap at the edges a good deal to provide sufficient protection. The flexibility of the liquid screed then compensates for these small bumps later.

The price of the screed may increase slightly due to these insulating materials, which means that the insulation should be taken into account when calculating the total price and the total amount.

Laying of screed

First of all, the dry screed should be mixed with water. There are special machines that can be borrowed from the hardware store. Even small concrete mixers are well suited. Afterwards, the mass can be roughly spread out in the room. For large rooms, it is recommended to first separate it into sections. This works well with long and narrow wooden boards. Then the screed should then be distributed reasonably evenly, but not yet smoothly.

Afterwards you can further refine with a stripping board. The final smoothing is then done with a steel smoothing machine. For all smoothing work, a spirit level should already be used to produce as level a floor as possible. These steps are then repeated until the entire surface is smooth. After that, the screed must then dry out for up to a month before it can finally be used.

Prices and costs of screed

The final price depends on a number of factors. For the costs of the actual material especially the room size, as well as the later height of the screed, must be considered. The room size also applies, as already mentioned for the amount of insulation material. In addition, additional costs may be incurred when equipment must be lent. Screed concrete or cement is generally very cheap from the basic price. The costs are less than one euro per kilo of dry matter. Other types of screed are also a lot more expensive, which always depends on the respective properties. In principle, screed can also be laid by a professional. The prices are then around 20 euros per square meter, but this should definitely be clarified beforehand.

Summary

Screed is available in many different variants and designs, all of which are used for different purposes. Most commonly it occurs as a cement floor screed. It can be laid with appropriate insulation by flowing and later smoothing and can then be used after the dry season.
