Stone wall in the living room: Made easy with a little patience
Already since For many years, our homes are no longer just wallpapers or tiles on the walls of, for example, the kitchen, living room, bathroom or bedroom. More and more people are getting a huge piece of nature into the house. The speech is not about a wood paneling on the ceiling and wall. Rather, it is one of the oldest and most durable materials on earth: stone. For more than 50 years, more and more people have opted for a stone wall in the living room.
What options are there for building a stone wall in the living room?
Surely it would be unbelievable if the entire wall were made of real natural stone , However, such a wall cladding is associated with correspondingly high costs and also with a very large effort. But now there are many different ideas for a wall design with stone, such as using special artificial stones. To make a modern stone wall complete, there are even special molds that allow you to make your very own bricks completely yourself by casting each stone yourself.
Many landlords do not like it when their tenants unilaterally Stone wall design, which can be removed afterwards only with great effort. Therefore, it is best to contact your landlord first and get his approval - preferably even in writing.
Create a retreat to relax
The reason why so many people love nature want to get their own four walls, is likely to look in today's fast pace. In everyday life - whether private or professional - it is often very hectic. Everything is planned in detail, from early morning until late in the evening. No wonder then that you want to be able to really relax in your living room. Guaranteed with a stone wall in the living room.
Verblender - the cost-effective alternative to natural stone
The cheapest way to get at least something similar to a stone wall, is certainly a corresponding photo wallpaper. There are many different models with matching design. But such a real flair often does not want to come up with a photo wallpaper. Instead, you can also resort to so-called veneers. These are usually many times cheaper than real natural stone and can even be attached much easier on the wall, so that in the end creates a very harmonious picture, which suggests that it is indeed a stone wall made of natural stone. Verblender also have the advantage that they have a much lower weight. These bricks are very popular in rented apartments or houses because they can easily be removed from the wall. However, the bricks can imitate a real stone wall very well.
Stone wall in the rented apartment
Would you, although you only live for rent and your landlord disagree a wall cladding made of natural stone, but not a modern stone wall in the living room , then you can still use real stones. Simply do not stick the stones directly to the wall, but first screw them to a suitable surface. Excellent is usually a wooden plate. However, in order to be able to carry the weight of the stones, you must make sure that the plate is not only particularly flat, but also has a high rigidity. This means that you need to screw the wood panel securely to the wall. In general, the thicker the plate is, the better it is suitable for a wall design of this kind.
Do not reach for solid wood, but choose, for example, an OSB or pressboard. Multiplexing is also suitable.
Depending on the size of your living room, it may be advisable not to dowel the wooden panel directly to the wall, but first to make a substructure onto which the wooden panels are then fixed. In this case, you could even use several smaller panels, making them easier to transport home from the hardware store. Such a substructure can, for example, be made of roof battens that screw directly onto the wall.
Once the wood panel is securely fastened to the wall in the living room, you must pretreat it with a low-solvent substrate. This prevents the wood from becoming saturated with moisture from the tile adhesive. As a result, it can set better.
If, in fact, you happen to be taking off your clothes or even looking at the stone wall in the living room, it is easy to remove the wall cladding without residue. All that is left is a few holes that you had to drill to fix the wooden panels. Fortunately, these too can easily be closed.
Making bricks for wall design yourself
Many do-it-yourselfers are now casting their own bricks for a modern stone wall - not least for cost reasons. Another major reason is often the unbelievable number of different options available to you. All you need is a few basic products.
- Flex adhesive
- Low-solvent primer
- Stirring Rod
- Tooth Trowel
- Mortar Bucket
Before you start, you should first calculate how much construction plaster you actually need. As a rule, you get about 0.75 to 1 square meter of stones from about 20 kilograms of construction plaster. Of course, this depends entirely on how thick the individual stones are at the end, which is determined by the depth of the mold. As a rule you will find an indication of the required amount of gypsum per square meter in the casting mold, which you can use as the basis for your calculations.
Building plaster is already available for less than one euro per kilogram. Therefore, buy one or two sacks more than calculated, before you have to drive to the hardware store again. Many DIY stores even give you a volume discount, which means you'll end up paying even more for a single sack.
When you touch the gypsum compound, follow the manufacturer's instructions. The gypsum should by no means be too liquid, but it must not be too dry. It is important that it can still be filled well into the mold.
It is essential to follow the instructions of the casting mold, because some casting molds require a release agent. If you can not find any information about it, first do a trial pour. So you can easily figure out if you need to use a release agent.
After you've poured the stones, they need to dry for a few hours until they're fully cured. After that you can simply push them out of the mold and pour new stones. Repeat this often until you have enough stones to tile the entire wall.
Preparing the Wall
Before you can glue the gypsum blocks to the wall, you must first prepare the surface. For example, it must not be highly absorbent. Depending on the nature of the substrate, it must therefore be painted with a primer. Make sure, however, that the primer is also suitable for applying a flexible adhesive. As soon as the primer has dried through, if necessary, you can mix and apply the flexible adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. To do this, use a tooth trowel. Then stick the self-cast gypsum pieces to the wall in bursts.
Before attaching the bricks, make sure to use light switches, sockets or corners and edges. Holes for light switches and sockets can be easily drilled with a correspondingly large hole saw. For example, if the stone hits a doorframe or the edge of a wall, reach for the foxtail and simply saw them to size.
Once the stone wall has been fully erected, access the silicone and have the end joints , Occasionally, something may not run quite as well, creating a slight gap between some stones. If you notice a gap between two veneers, you can easily fill them with acrylic. In no case you should resort to silicone here, because silicone can not be painted over, acrylic, however, already. With a little effort and patience, you end up with a really nice and relatively cheap stone wall in the living room, in the kitchen or any other room of your choice.
Organic, do-it-yourself, ... these are just two of many things that have been big in the last few years. Even the stone wall in the living room or the kitchen has been very popular for decades. With a little patience bring home a piece of naturalness.
