The way to your own wooden house

The way to your own wooden house

There comes a time in the lives of many small families and married couples, with them a decision to build a house. Most still opt for solid brick prefabricated houses. The wooden house has not yet fully established itself, many do not dare to create a house in this traditional construction . The reason is often the fear that such houses require constant care because of the material. At the wooden house you can see the well-known image of a house made of bales or large tree trunks. The modern wooden houses are almost indistinguishable from the standard houses in appearance. Differences are mainly in the advantages that wooden houses bring with them.

Life in connection with nature

Wood as a building material has been used for many centuries. As early as 1000 BC, in the Bronze Age, the first wooden houses were built on the territory of the present day. They were replaced by concrete and stone buildings. However, the wooden houses are experiencing a resurrection that will be more popular than ever. People are yearning for more closeness to nature, and the benefits these houses bring are not to be overlooked. The natural material wood has a low thermal conductivity , which makes it a well-suited building material. Energy efficiency is a leading argument in the selection of building materials in today's energy prices. The so-called passive houses are so energy efficient that the residents actually have little or no additional costs. They draw the heat from the supply air, so they completely dispense with the normal heating system. These buildings have very well insulated windows. The water is heated in the passive houses via a solar system. The people perceive the wood as a warm and pleasant building material. The wooden living rooms therefore offer a lot of comfort. Wood as a building material is very health-promoting - the wooden houses need no chemical impregnation.

Knowing the best construction time

Two aspects have to be considered: the season and the planned time. For the sake of cost reasons, the summer is the most suitable option for the summer. For the electricity, construction heating and drying paid at this time of the year less money. The prefabricated building will also dry out more quickly in the summer months, and the building materials are better stored on the construction site. This is an auspicious time for the construction of houses, the DIY stores like to put their freight on larger tours, which offers the savings in transport costs. From the duration here you build a log house faster than a standard house. The brick houses need interior and exterior plaster - that takes time. The wooden houses can be confiscated immediately after completion, provided the floor coverings are ready. A wooden house does not require any treatment of the interior walls.

Wood is not just wood - the choice of wood

At the heart of the wooden house is the choice of the right type of wood that best suits the needs. Each type of wood has a different insulation value, the settlement and stability are also different. The differences also exist in the acquisition and operating costs of the log cabin. The differences concern the type of care or intervals for painting. The origin of the wood is decisive - the logistics costs are of course different with the wood from Sweden or from the Black Forest. Apart from the transport costs, Scandinavian woods are preferable to the German ones. Growth in the north is much slower, resulting in dense, stable wood with the best insulation properties. The energy savings will restore the higher cost over time. This wood causes less problems with setting. It is above all the spruce, pine and larch trees with which a wooden house is best built.

Thermal insulation done right

Proper insulation is crucial in the wooden houses for the future energy efficiency of the house. Depending on the design, various possibilities for thermal insulation are available. In general, a distinction is made between the wall insulation, insulation of the transitions to the roof, the block corner and the roof. Herewith the usual insulation materials at a glance:

  • Wood wool - is made from spruce wood, is created by planing. With magnesite in bonded plates, it is offered as insulating material. The disadvantages: Oxidising, tends to mold. Advantages: has a good sound insulation value.
  • Glass and rockwool -very good insulation properties, extremely inexpensive. The mineral wool (camelite) is unfortunately a very good breeding ground for various germs, which spread quickly in the insulating layer. Advantage: good fire resistance.
  • Cellulose - is obtained from old, shredded newspapers. The cellulose is directly embedded in the insulating layer, but when damp, it loses its insulation effect, does not mold up.
  • Perlite - small lava stone, very light. As a stone, it can not rot and can not store water. No chance for mold. Ideal as insulation material.

Interior installation: Heating and electrical installation

The choice here is difficult, because there are many good options. Heat pump, district heating, pellets or gas? Depending on the design, size and insulation properties, the appropriate selection should be canceled. In any case, we recommend a heat pump, which is combined with a solar system for the water. To heat the room, set up a tiled stove and fireplace, which are connected to the hot water tank. With the electrical installation you have the advantage of precise planning. The pipes in the wooden houses are not laid on the walls or the floor, later mistakes in the laying go into the money. Remember when laying the cables: do not forget the alarm system and the smoke detectors. The cables should be pulled with a loop during assembly. The cable will not be torn or torn when the house is later rebuilt.

Wooden House - Further Benefits

Most builders who have built a wooden house and live in it are deeply convinced of this method of construction. The most common reasons for a wooden house include:

  • a better living environment. The thermal conductivity of the wood is one of the reasons why it is cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • healthy living. The wooden rooms are free of pollutants and radiation exposure, the surfaces are warmer, the room air dryer than in the standard houses.
  • cheaper construction costs, short construction time, more opportunities for own performance (simpler construction), the relationship with the house is a lot
  • environmentally friendly construction.

The quality assurance and quality control during the construction of wooden houses in Germany makes this construction method competitive with the conventional construction methods. Timber construction is the future.
