Tiles as a modern element of interior design

Tiles as a modern element of interior design

Especially in a small space it's difficult to come up with your own ideas or inspirations enough to respect or contribute. If in doubt, one will decide in favor of the space available, rather than prefer the optical side. Tiles are in demand because of the versatile patterns, looks and designs - and they also offer a functional component. From psychology we know that colors have a not to be underestimated influence on the general mood. It is therefore also useful for reasons of living environment to approximate the topic a little bit and to give each room its own identity.

In this article we will take a closer look at this topic and give concrete tips, first on the use of tiles in general and The design hereby in particular.

Tile is not the same tile

Nature gives us certain optics that could not be implemented in other ways until some time ago in an authentic way. Tiles, on the other hand, provide the ideal basis for implementing optics such as sandstone, granite or marble in a cost-effective, robust and resistant way. This is based on porcelain stoneware, above all, of course, due to the natural surface structure and the intense color scheme. The choice of material, irrespective of the actual design, influences the structure as well as the possibilities of embedding. First of all, stoneware tiles are used, which are nothing more than glazed, ceramic tiles. They are only used in the interior, due to the lack of frost protection, they would have a reduced outdoor life.

Particularly interesting in this area are the already mentioned tiles made of porcelain stoneware, which are like classic tiles based on stoneware initially extremely hard and hardwearing. Tiles made of porcelain stoneware, as they are offered in the trade in great variance and high refinement level, set standards in the design of housing. They are basically not glazed, characterized by an extremely reduced water absorbency - according to current standards, this is a maximum of 0.5 percent in terms of weight. As a standard, the standard DIN EN 14411 in Group B Ia is implemented here by quality manufacturers. This property is an essential argument, but is considered to be "completely dense".

This circumstance is particularly advantageous when such panels are used as floor or wall panels. They are considered to be extremely insensitive to stains, thereby reducing the cleaning effort. The low adhesion means that it is extremely difficult for other substances to deposit on it or even permanently. The situation is different only with polished panels, because here a small part of the surface is sanded off. This is necessary to achieve the desired gloss effect. If you want to bring such designs in their homes, a prior impregnation is recommended. Even though there may be minor deposits rather than "normal signs of use".

Ideas for your own four walls

If you are looking for ideas for living space design, be it for the kitchen, the bathroom or even the living room, it is worth taking a look first current trends. This is because they usually represent the highest level of refinement and thereby sets on the best possible properties in terms of material and color intensity. Analogous to the great trend towards Scandinavian furnishing elements, wood looks in various designs today represent the best opportunity for rustic, homely adaptations. Due to the matted look and the dark optics are, and these are significant advantages in heavily used living spaces, things such as protection by registered dirt, moisture or dirt not immediately visible. Even the owners of four-legged friends, who are known to distribute their hair everywhere and continuously, rely on components such as low maintenance and high-quality, shiny appearance.

In order to restore the contrast in this context, but in particular to create smooth transitions between the hall and living room, in principle, gray tiles are recommended. They have a timelessly elegant and modern look, so they also have the advantage of being able to incorporate almost any interior design style. Very interesting are also the cement tiles of a traditional kind, which represent a decoration for their own due to their surface texture and pattern. Here you make use of the typical design with color pigments and benefit from a good price / performance ratio, because such tiles are merely pressed and not burned consuming.

Practical Tips for Laying Tiles

  • For a perfect fit it is necessary that tiles stick directly and non-slip to the wall. This circumstance comes with larger tiles, which naturally have a higher weight, wavering. Here, it is advisable to level these off on the back and use special tile adhesive. In combination with a previous primer, these are the best means for tailor-made work.
  • Especially in old buildings, in the last few years, people have switched to combining old with new and simply laying tile on tile. To dispense with hammer and chisel, you only need a dust and grease-free surface. There are frequent problems in the splash water areas of bathrooms, here the seal must be renewed at times. Use an adhesive and contact base to make the floorcovering easier and to apply the new tiles easily.
