Changing bulbs: Beware of energy-saving bulbs

Changing bulbs: Beware of energy-saving bulbs

The normal, classic bulbs are no longer sold within the EU distributed. There are now a number of very special lamps on the market, such as energy saving lamps. These have the same luminosity, but often consume less than 80 percent of the otherwise necessary for light bulbs energy in the form of watts. It contains mercury, which makes replacement very dangerous.

In this entry, we provide instructions for replacing energy-saving lamps, as well as halogen or fluorescent tubes.

Contaminants are metered

Mercury is proven contained in a corresponding dose in energy-saving lamps, so you have to exercise the necessary caution when replacing in principle. Nevertheless, the scare tactics in the media meant that one ignored one of them and now installed heavily used lights. According to studies by the Federal Environmental Agency, in which energy-saving lamps were broken and thus an everyday situation was simulated, there is no great danger at first. Only then can be spoken of a continuous load, if fragments are not completely removed or are left there longer and the ventilation in the room was poor. What is important in this context is simply to limit and avoid concentrations of mercury by properly removing debris. Afterwards, the floor should be thoroughly cleaned and the entire room should be ventilated several times so that the concentrations can evaporate.

Here, the normal room temperature is advantageous, which makes it difficult to evolve liquid mercury vapor. However, it is advisable to close the fragments tightly and to use a glass jar.

How to replace energy-saving lamps

  • Take a bag, such as a freezer bag or a shopping bag, and put it over the lamp. Now you use gloves and reduce the risk of breakage. When unscrewing, it is important to evenly distribute the pressure and not jerk the movement.
  • As a precaution, the power supply should be cut to prevent the risk of electric shock. Allow the energy-saving lamp to cool down for a while, then grasp it on the base and turn it out of the socket as above.
  • Energy-saving lamps are usually disposed of using hazardous waste, depending on the situation in your community. Frequently there is this possibility on pollutant farms, partly you also reach the pollutant mobile of the city or the district.

Procedure for halogen spots

Halogen spots are now part of the classic range of lamps and have similar advantages over the classic light bulb, as in the Energy-saving lamp, for example, by a longer shelf life and a significantly improved efficiency with lower energy consumption is the case.

  • First, a special suction cup is required for GU5.3 sockets, in general, the change depends on the respective version. If the mains connection is disconnected and the unit is switched off, the methodology of each socket is used.
  • The GU10 sockets, which are called high-voltage halogen lamps, have the shape of a bayonet mount so that the lamp can easily be locked with a turn. Here, you first turn the bulb until the resistance fades away and it can be removed.
  • GU5.3 sockets need a suction cup as mentioned, since they are inserted. For this fix the suction cup straight on the spot and pull it out evenly, whereby the pressure may turn out only small, otherwise the spots bend.
  • All other sockets have the jack, so they're easy to pull out.

Trying to Use Fluorescent Tubes

The commonly popular neon lights, often used in offices and showrooms, are very easy to replace with a trick.

  • Is the power capped and If the system is switched off, it is necessary to extract the fluorescent tube evenly from both sides. Under no circumstances should you bend the plastic holders or remove them, they are firmly mounted.
  • The fluorescent tube is fixed by a rotation, the plastic holder has no effect. Therefore, first remove possible coverings. Now make a quarter turn (90 degrees) forward, breaking resistance with a slight jerk. The pin and slot must be perpendicular to each other so that they can now be taken out of the socket.

For safety, it is also advisable to use working gloves.
